Heather enjoys teaching poetry to help elementary students, especially English Learners, build literacy skills through learning sensory vocabulary and reciting poetry. Many of these young poets read their poems at the annual school art show. Heather also gave workshops on writing heritage poems to high school English Learners whose poems were published in the literary journal.

Teacher Consultant

As a Teacher Consultant (TC) for the Northern Virginia Writing Project (NVWP), Heather taught creative writing to emerging writers, grades 1-5 for the Saturday morning writing workshops and the summer writing programs. She has also taught poetry workshops for the Enrichment Program of Arlington County Public Schools.

Presentations

Sharing her passion for poetry’s role in building literacy skills, Heather gave presentations to the Language and Learning Conference of the NVWP (2017), the lead ESL teachers from Fairfax County (2013), and the Washington Area Teachers of English and other Languages (WATESOL) Conference (2012).
